Plans for Fall 2009

Posted in Uncategorized by nhsbookclub on the June 10, 2009

One day before summer vacation, but I’m already thinking about next year.  Some events I have in mind:

1.  The used paperback books sale/fundraiser.  Things just got too crazy at the end of this year, but we’ll definitely do it for the beginning of next year.

2.  Gaming Tourney in the Library.  We did a dry run for May Day.  I’d like to have at least 4 different gaming tournaments going on and as many people entered as possible.

3.  Battle of the Books.  We’ll need to think carefully about how this contest will work, but I think we’ll pair up popular titles, put them on a bracket and let people vote on their favorite.

4.  Anyone interested in meeting at the movie theater the night “New Moon” is released?

As always, I’ll need all of your ideas and help to make these events successful.

I hope everyone has a great summer and reads, reads, reads.  I’ll be checking this blog and my email, so let me know what you think.

Our “Twilight” celebration will be this Friday, from 4-6.

Please wear your Twilight gear and bring any refreshments that you can–soda, chips, paper plates, etc.

If you’re having trouble logging in to blog, please see me ASAP.

Looking forward to seeing everyone on Friday.

“Twilight” Celebration Rescheduled for April 24, 6-8 pm.

Posted in Uncategorized by nhsbookclub on the April 15, 2009

At yesterday’s meeting we moved the “Twilight” Celebration to Friday, April 24th, from 6-8pm.  The event is only for Book Club members, but if you have friends interested in seeing the movie, invite them to join the Book Club.  They just need to see me sometime before the 24th.  In order to attend the event, all Book Club Members must post at least one time to this blog.  See me if you need your login and password.

We also decided chose The Persistence of Memory by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes as our Spring Selection.  The runner-up was Graceling by Kristin Cashore.  The Library will order a copy of this book if anyone wants to check it out and read it.  The cost for The Persistance of Memory  is $11.50.  Bring me your money by Monday, April 20th, and I will order a copy for you.

The Paperback Book Sale is scheduled for Friday, April 24th in the NHS Lobby.  Please bring in any unwanted paperback (or hardback) books to sell.  We will sort them in the library the week of April 20th to prepare for the sale.

Books You Wish the NHS Library Would Put on Its Shelves

Please post any book titles, authors, or subjects you would like the Library to purchase.  Thanks for your input.

We’re back in business . . .

Posted in Uncategorized by nhsbookclub on the March 26, 2009

We had a great meeting today, and I’m so excited to get the Book Club revitalized.  It looks like we should be able to to our Twilight night.  I’ll be sure to get information out to all of you about that.  Also, keep checking here.

We also had some great fundraising ideas, as well as some general ideas about how to make our Book Club better.  I’ve made another page to our blog where you can post thoughts about fundraising and other things we can do.

As for our Spring picks . . . Here are some books I’ve run across that we might like.  Be sure to post back to me which ones you like the best.  Since many of us are going through Twilight-withdrawal, I tried to find some that were in the fantasy/romance/supernatural vein.  If you’d like to broaden your horizons some more, we can certainly look for others.

Possibility #1:  Graceling by Kristin Cashore

Possibility #2: The Queen of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner

Possibility #3:  The Persistence of Memory by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes

Possibility #4:  Jessica’s Guide to Dating on the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey

The library purchased one copy of each of these books.  If you’re interested, please come by the library and check one out.  If you’ve already read one, please post your comment!

December Book Club Information

Posted in Uncategorized by nhsbookclub on the November 25, 2008

At today’s meeting, each of you should have been registered with edublogs and have your login and password.  Use these to comment on the books we read.  Please remember that all of our Book Club Information and Announcements will be posted on this blog, so check regularly!

December’s Picks

You may choose between the following books.  Both are relatively new releases and have gotten some positive attention.

Choice #1: Boost by Kathy Mackel.

Amazon describes this book as follows:

Thirteen-year-old Savvy is six two and full of raw basketball talent; her three-point shot is deadly. But she’s also skinny and gets pushed around on the court. Her older sister, Callie, is a freshman on varsity cheerleading, but she’s not quite light enough to be a flier—her coveted position. Both girls need to boost their level of competition to get off the bench and into the action. When steroids are found in Savvy’s gym bag, she claims they are not hers. Suddenly, accusations are flying and nobody knows who is telling the truth.

When it comes to competitive sports, no one is exempt from being offered a boost.

If you’re interested in purchasing this book, please bring me $12 by Monday, December 8th.  The actual cost of the book is $11.55.  The extra .45 goes toward shipping and handling.  Checks can be made out to NHS.  As always, the library will purchase a copy for you to check out.

Choice #2: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Amazon describes this book as follows:

Katniss is a 16-year-old girl living with her mother and younger sister in the poorest district of Panem, the remains of what used be the United States. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, “The Hunger Games.” The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one thing is constant: kill or be killed. When Kat’s sister is chosen by lottery, Kat steps up to go in her place.

If you’re interested in purchasing this book, please bring me $13 by Monday, December 8th.  The actual cost is $12.23.  The extra .77 goes toward shipping and handling.  Checks can be made out to NHS.  As always, the library will purchase a copy for you to check out.
